Umrah visa from India in 2026: what you actually need

Most people planning their first Umrah from India start by searching for the visa application form. There isn't one they can fill in themselves, and finding that out late is what turns a calm plan into a rushed one.

Here is what the process actually involves, what documents you need in hand, and the two deadlines that catch people out.

You cannot apply for an Umrah visa yourself

Saudi Arabia's Nusuk platform lets pilgrims from certain countries apply directly — the UK, the United States, most of the EU, the GCC, Malaysia and others. India is not on that list.

Indian passport holders must apply through a travel agency authorised by the Saudi authorities. This is not an agent trying to sell you something; it is how the system is built. If a website offers to let you apply for an Umrah visa yourself on an Indian passport, be careful — at best it is out of date.

What this means in practice: your visa, your hotels in Makkah and Madinah, and your ground transport are all submitted together through an approved provider. They are not separate purchases you can assemble yourself and then get stamped.

Documents you need before anything can be submitted

• Passport — valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry, with at least two blank pages.
• Photograph — to current Saudi specification. This is stricter than a standard Indian passport photo and is one of the most common reasons an application is sent back.
• Confirmed return flight.
• Hotel bookings in Makkah and Madinah, made through an approved provider.
• Ground transport booked through Nusuk or a licensed provider.
• Vaccination certificate — see below.

Processing usually takes somewhere between 24 and 72 hours once a complete file is submitted. The phrase that matters there is complete. An incomplete file does not sit in a queue; it comes back.

The vaccination requirement

The meningococcal ACWY vaccine is mandatory for every pilgrim aged one year and above. Two details are easy to miss:

• It must be given at least ten days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia. A vaccination taken the week you fly does not satisfy the requirement.
• Certificate validity depends on the type — around five years for the conjugate vaccine, around three for the polysaccharide. If you have travelled for Umrah or Hajj before, check the date on your old certificate rather than assuming it still counts.

Seasonal influenza and routine immunisations are recommended rather than required. Speak to your doctor about what is right for you, particularly for elderly parents.

The 30-day trap

This is the one that causes the most trouble.

An Umrah visa must be used within 30 days of being issued — the window was reduced from 90 days. Once you enter, you may stay for up to 90 days, but the clock on entering is short.

The practical consequence: do not apply for the visa months ahead of a trip you have not fully arranged. Your flights, hotels and leave from work need to be settled first, so that the visa is issued against a journey that is actually about to happen. Applying too early is a more expensive mistake than applying late.

Women travelling without a mahram

Women aged 18 and above may now perform Umrah without a mahram. Saudi authorities no longer require mahram documentation.

This is a genuine change and it is still not widely known — a number of families are unaware that a mother, sister or daughter can travel with a group rather than waiting for a male relative to be free at the same time.

What to ask before you choose who handles it

Since you have to go through an agency, the choice of agency is the whole decision. Four questions worth asking anyone before you pay:

• Which hotel, and how far from the Haram in metres? "Walking distance" and "close to the Haram" mean nothing. A named hotel and a number mean something, and you can check both yourself on a map.
• What is the total price, and what is not in it? Ask specifically about ziyarat, meals, airport transfers and the Makkah–Madinah journey. These are the items most often left out of a headline figure and added afterwards.
• Who will be handling my file, and can I reach them while I am there? A phone number that is answered at nine in the evening in Makkah is worth more than a discount.
• What happens if my flight is cancelled or my visa is delayed? The answer tells you whether you are dealing with someone who has handled problems before.

A note on timing

Umrah season and pricing move with the Islamic calendar, and demand around Ramadan is very different from the quieter months. If your dates are flexible, ask what the difference actually costs — it is often larger than people expect, and travelling a few weeks either side of a peak can change the whole budget.
